QR Codes: What they are, How to use Tracking Links in ENGAGE, How to use in print marketing

What is a QR Code?

A QR Code (or "Quick Response" Code) is a type of barcode that can be read by a digital device (a smartphone or tablet). Often used in print marketing, these codes typically point to a single website URL.

Restaurants can effectively use QR Codes to link customers to a specific online destination, like their Online Orders URL or a specific page on their website.

How does a QR Code work?

Most smartphones have QR scanners built into the camera.
Some tablets, such as the Apple iPad, have QR readers built into their cameras.
Some older devices may require a particular app to read QR Codes (like this one)– these apps are readily available in the Apple App Store and Google Play

To scan a QR Code using your device:
...Open the Camera on your smartphone (or a QR Reader app)
...Point your Camera at the QR Code
...Click the on-screen URL to follow the QR destination

Try it!
We created these flyers to print & distribute around the restaurant for Murdoch's Irish Pub.
Point your camera to any of the QR Codes on these flyers to interact with their pages:

"ORDER ONLINE"
QR code links to online orders

"VIEW OUR MENU"
QR code links to menu page on website

"LEAVE US A REVIEW"
QR code links to reviews page

"JOIN OUR ECLUB"
QR code links to eClub page

For each flyer, we generated a QR Code for the specific destination, then customized a branded flyer for print to explain how it should be used.  For example, the flyer to "VIEW OUR MENU" has a specific QR Code generated to link to the menu page on the Murdoch's Irish Pub website:

-Tracking Link: a shortened link that leads to a URL. When created in Engage, these short links can be monitored with number of clicks and users, notably used to monitor click engagement from social media posts or online campaigns.
-QR Code: a barcode read by digital device. From Engage, these can be tracked with number of scans and users, most often used in print marketing campaigns.
  1. Click "Tracking Links" in the lefthand navigation, under "Engagement"

  1. Click "Create New Tracking Link" top right

  2. Type or paste the link you want to use (example murdochsirishpub.com/menu) > click "create new tracking link"
  3. Once created, you have options to:
    -Give your link/QR a description
-Copy the short link to clipboard
-"Right Click" to Save/Name the QR image in your files

To use and track your shortened link,
    choose "copy to clipboard"

To use and track your QR Code,
    right-click and "Save Image As..."
    to your computer:

  1. To track the usage of your link or QR Code, find the link under "Tracking Links Manager"
    -hover over "Show Details"

-then view the data - includes total clicks and unique clicks for both the link and the QR Code:

Alternatively, Spillover Support is happy to generate QR Codes that link to your website pages or online orders, feel free to reach out to support@spillover.com or Log a Support Ticket for any special requests.

How can I use QR Codes for my business?

QR Codes should be used in print marketing to lead your customers to the desired destination, most effectively used to:
  1. Direct customers to your Online Orders URL
    ...example, order.spillover.com/ordering/tx/spilloverburgers/
  2. Direct customers to your website menu, notably on tabletops for dine-in customers in lieu of paper menus
    ...example, murdochsirishpub.com/menu/
  3. Direct customers to leave a review
    ...example, reviews.spillover.com/l/murdochsirishpub-austin
  4. Direct customers to join your eClub
    ...example, murdochsirishpub.com/eclub/
We suggest that you print and display QR Codes in easily-accessible, high-traffic areas like tables, doors, or by a register. You can print QR codes in virtually any size and display on any surface -- on flyers, cards, banners, stickers, decals, etc!
