How to Make Simple Edits to Products in Your eCommerce Store

How to Make Simple Edits to Products in Your eCommerce Store

This guide explains how to make common product updates in your eCommerce store, including changing a product's name, description, price, images, category, and other basic settings.

Opening a Product

  1. Select Products from the left navigation menu.
  2. Select Products from the expanded submenu.
  3. Locate the product you want to update.
  4. Select the blue Edit button with the pencil icon.

The buttons on the right side of each product allow you to perform the following actions:

  • Edit: Opens the product so you can update its information.
  • Copy: Creates a duplicate of the product that can be edited and saved as a new item.
  • Delete: Permanently removes the product from the store.

Copying a product can save time when creating a new item that has similar information, pricing, settings, or options.

Editing Basic Product Information

After opening a product, the Details section displays its primary information and settings.

Product Name

The Name field is the product title customers see throughout the online store.

Examples include:

  • Baseball Hat
  • Chocolate Cake
  • 16-20 lb. Turkey

Changing this field updates the product name anywhere the item appears in the store.

Slug

The Slug controls the text that appears at the end of the product's web address.

For example, a slug of test-product would create the following web address:

/store/products/test-product

Slugs should normally use lowercase letters and hyphens instead of spaces. It is best to leave an existing slug unchanged unless the product's web address needs to be updated.

Changing the slug may cause previously shared links or bookmarked pages to stop working.

Description

The Description field contains the information displayed on the product's page.

A useful description may include:

  • What the product includes
  • Available sizes or quantities
  • Ingredients or materials
  • Preparation or pickup information
  • Special ordering instructions
  • Important restrictions or disclaimers

Keep the description accurate and easy to understand so customers know what they are purchasing.

Master Price

The Master Price is the product's standard starting price before any additional options, modifiers, variants, or other charges are added.

For example, entering 12.00 sets the product's starting price to $12.00.

Enter the price as a number without a dollar sign.

Compare at Price

The Compare at Price field can be used to display the product's original price when the item is being offered at a lower price.

For example:

  • Master Price: $12.00
  • Compare at Price: $15.00

This indicates that the product was previously or normally priced at $15.00 and is currently available for $12.00.

Leave this field at 0.00 when an original or comparison price should not be displayed.

Available On

The Available On field determines when the product becomes available in the store.

A future date can be entered when a product should not appear or become available until a specific day.

Discontinue On

The Discontinue On field can be used to automatically discontinue a product on a selected date.

This can be useful for seasonal products, holiday menus, limited-time items, or products that should no longer be sold after a deadline.

Maximum Quantity Per Order

The Max quantity per order field limits how many of the product a customer can add to a single order.

Leave this field empty when there should not be a maximum quantity.

Same-Day Pickup or Delivery

The Allow Same Day Pickup/Delivery setting determines whether customers can select the current day when choosing a pickup or delivery date for the product.

Disable this setting when the item requires advance notice or preparation time.

Product Images

Select Images from the menu on the right side of the product editor to add or manage product photos.

Clear, accurate images help customers understand what they are purchasing. Multiple images may be added when customers would benefit from seeing different views of the product.

Images should be large enough to appear clearly without being blurry, but they should also be optimized so they do not unnecessarily slow down the website.

Categories

The Categories field determines where the product appears within the online store.

Examples of categories may include:

  • Merchandise
  • Holiday Menus
  • Desserts
  • Catering
  • Apparel

A product may be assigned to more than one category when it needs to appear in multiple sections of the store.

Be careful when removing a category. A product that is not assigned to the correct category may still exist in the system but may be difficult for customers to find.

Saving Your Changes

  1. Review the information you changed.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the product editor.
  3. Select the green Update button.

Selecting Cancel leaves the editor without saving your changes.
